MADISON, Wis. — The 2021-22 Madison Capitols were a team you may not have seen coming as they were pinned as the underdog while making a historic run to the Clark Cup finals, but that success has made the organization hungry to continue to build off of it.
“We sat on the other side of the blue line while Sioux City raised the cup,” said Corey Leivermann, head coach and general manager of the Madison Capitols. “I think that’s a motivator itself right there for a lot of the guys returning.”
KEY PLAYERS
While there are a number of players who won’t be returning to the Capitols this season, there are a number who are.

who really did a good job and kind of carried us down the stretch, so you’ve gotta look at a guy like
Mason Kucenski
who learned under him who is gonna get every opportunity to be the guy here this year.”
Quinn Finley
is another player who will be returning to the roster this upcoming season. Over the summer, Finley was selected by the New York Islanders in the third round of the NHL Draft, and 78th overall. The young forward contributed 17 goals and 22 assists for 39 points in his 2021-22 campaign.
2021-22 SEASON
- Last year
Luke Mittelstadt
, who will be playing for the Minnesota Gophers in 2022-23, was the point leader on the team with 55 while Jake Dunlap was the goals leader with 24.
- Their trip to the Clark Cup final where they took on the Sioux City Musketeers was the first time in franchise history the team made it to the championship.
- The Capitols went 30-29 with 3 OT losses under former head coach Tom Upton.
ARENA NOTES
The Capitols play at Bob Suter’s Capitol Ice Arena, with the name paying tribute to Bob Suter who is a former Wisconsin Badger and a US Olympic gold medalist. The arena was built in 1999 and has two NHL sized ice sheets, and can seat over 2,600 in the main rink. The facility is state of the art and underwent major renovations in 2018.
The Madison Capitols will officially being the 2022-23 season on Sept. 22 at the USHL Dick’s Sporting Goods Fall Classic at UPMC Arena in Pittsburgh. Their first game of the season will be against the Tri-City Storm.
